Plastic-Free July swap: Wild deodorant review

July 4, 2021 Filed Under: Blog posts, Plastic Free July, Sustainability

wild deodorant flatlay

I have been wanting to swap to a sustainable deodorant for a while now, and as it is Plastic-Free July, I thought this would be the perfect time. I’ve heard about the Wild deodorant a lot on Instagram, so I researched the product a bit more and then decided to go for it!

What is Wild deodorant?

Wild is the first zero-waste and refillable deodorant in the world. It is dermatologically tested with all vegan and natural ingredients. The case is aluminium free and made from recycled plastic. As well as deodorant, they sell soap bars and wash bags.

The website is very simple to navigate and I would recommend choosing the subscription service as it works out cheaper than buying the case & scents individually. I chose a purple case and the limited edition watermelon crush scent. There are plenty of scents to choose from and one of the great things is that you can change your scents in your next refill delivery. What I really like about Wild is that you can decide how often you want the refills to be delivered – from 1 to 4 months.

How does it work?

When your package arrives, it will look like this:

I love that it has zero-waste packaging too – sometimes brands use plastic packaging for a zero-waste product which defeats the whole point. Wild says that one refill will last around 4 weeks but, from reviews, they seem to last a lot longer.

Now, I found the next stay very confusing! You have to twist the bottom of the deodorant until it can’t go any further – this sounds simple but I twisted for a very long time and nothing was happening. It’s ok, trust me and carry on. Once that happens, hold down the two buttons on the side and pull the bottom out – it might be a bit stiff but it should come out. Then you can take the lid off the refill and place it on the top of the part you just pulled out. Stick all of it back inside and take the lid off where you can now see your deodorant!

Pricing

If you opt for the subscription, you receive a case that is worth ยฃ10 and one refill which is worth ยฃ5 and you pay ยฃ12. I thought this was a pretty good deal because you can cancel or pause the subscription at any time. I used my Student Beans discount which got the price down to ยฃ10.20, but to reduce it even further you can get a FREE case from the refer a friend scheme!

wild deodorant

Another option is to choose a one-off purchase which is ยฃ25, including the case and 3 refills. This option won’t save you any money but you can choose multiple scents and find which you like best.

The last price is ยฃ35 for the case and 5 refills. Once again, you don’t save any money and if you don’t like any scents, it seems a bit of a waste.

I totally appreciate that the cost might not seem worth it if you do a lot of high-intensity activities, and therefore use a lot of deodorants. But for me, I don’t do many intensive exercises so I think it will last a while. As well as this, only buy it once you have used up your other deodorant – throwing out unused products isn’t being sustainable!

My overall opinion

I really like Wild, but I found the refill process hard to understand. The instructions on the box were too simple – luckily Katie Floss helped me out, but I thought mine came broken! I love that they have created some limited edition scents, a past scent was lemon meringue which sounds amazing. The watermelon crush scent is what made me order Wild. If you know me, you know I love anything watermelon. I also love the variety of case colours and how high quality they feel.

A few days after I placed my order, Wild announced that they were launching the sensitive skin range. I have very sensitive skin and so I have to really check the ingredients of products. Luckily, so far my skin has been ok with it. The only ingredient difference is that there isn’t any baking soda. My skin doesn’t have a problem with it, it tends to be nut products for me because of my allergy.

Overall, I would rate the wild deodorant 4/5 stars.

An overview

ProsCons
Subscription saves money and can pause anytimeThe refill process is a bit complicated
Wide variety of scents and case colours
Free and quick delivery
Zero-waste
All natural and vegan ingredients
Plastic-free

Have you tried Wild deodorant? What are your thoughts?

Best wishes, Cx

Oh I love Wild! I ordered because they had a lemon meringue scent one and I LOVE lemon meringue. But was unable to use it because my skin kept reacting to it! Their customer service was great and they helped me, but I had to switch scent. Now I have placed a new order for refills and the watermelon it’s on his way! Hopefully I can get to use this one (otherwise the two sensitive ones will have to do!)

I havenโ€™t tried Wild deodorant but itโ€™s an interesting concept.

A few years ago I started researching aluminum-free deodorants primarly from a health perspective. In the end, Iโ€™ve settled on the unwrapped Aromaco deodorant bar from Lush. Itโ€™s completely packaging free and, unlike a lot of other natural deodorants, I find it to be really effective even in our hot Canadian summers.

I agree. That sounds good ๐Ÿ˜ Some of Lush’s products cause me to have an allergic reaction which sucks because I love them so much!

I keep seeing this advertised everywhere at the moment! I love how they are more sustainable with he refils, and the watermelon fragrance sounds amazing! Have you found that they are effective in keeping you dry and smelling nice? I always worry about these types of deodorants, especially when working on a hot ward all day, so never venture to try them. I may have to gives these a go, purely for the watermelon fragrance haha!

Thank you for sharing this review! I have seen a few adverts for this deodorant, but I wasn’t sure how good it would be. It’s interesting to hear about the refill process, especially as that’s one of the more important parts. It’s good to see the positive review though, so thank you for sharing! Em x
