Although I am not vegan, oat milk is an absolute must-have for me! I switched to oat milk about 2 or 3 years ago, after trying it at my brother’s. First I tried it with hot chocolate and found it so delicious, much better than ‘ordinary’ milk. Now, I drink it with tea as well and love to use it in food such as pancakes and macaroni cheese. When Overherd contacted me to try out their oat milk powder, I was very intrigued! At first, I was a bit sceptical, but now I am very much a fan. Keep reading to find out who Overherd are, and how to use their oat milk powder.
Who is Overherd?
Overherd was founded in 2023 and is based in North Yorkshire. Overherd is the genius company that came up with the idea of oat milk powder. A whopping 90% of oat milk is water! With the water removed and the concentrated powder remaining, the packaging waste, food waste and CO2 emissions are reduced. It makes perfect sense, and this is something that Ocean Saver has done with anti-bacterial sprays. Overherd has created this product to not only create a delicious product but make other alternative milk brands rethink the lifecycle of their products.
How does it work?
Overherd sent me a 400g pouch of oat milk powder*, a 20g scooper and a glass bottle. The glass bottle has millilitre measurements to measure and store the oat milk.
The oat milk powder is comprised of 4 ingredients:
- Oats – Organic and sustainably grown.
- Coconut – MCT powder is made from coconut oil.
- Chicory root – Grown using certified sustainable agricultural practices.
- B12 and Calcium – Fortified to add extra goodness to a plant-based diet.
For every 20g of powder, you need 200ml of milk which creates 200ml of oat milk.
- Fill your glass bottle (or whatever you are storing the milk in) with 200ml of water.
- Scoop 20g of oat milk powder and add to the water.
- Put the lid on and shake until the powder has dissolved.
- Store in the fridge and use within 3-4 days (if it lasts that long!).

You can also add the powder straight into your cup of tea, but I found that I had to add a lot and it made more sense to make the milk first.
My Overherd oat milk powder review
There are so many things that I love about Overherd’s oat milk powder!
- Travel-friendly – I think the main thing that I love is the use it is going to get when I’m travelling! When I stay with someone who doesn’t drink oat milk, I normally have black tea or go without it. But now, I can take the powder with me to make up some while I’m there. I am planning on doing this when I see my sister soon.
- Decrease in food waste – I don’t drink milk very quickly (unless I’m making something with it). At uni, I would freeze half the carton of oat milk. But now, I can just make the amount that I want to use. 500ml is the perfect amount for me, so I will definitely be doing this.
- Taste – If you are worried the taste won’t be as good, don’t be! This oat milk is so creamy and oaty. Plus, you can add more powder if you want creamier milk. It’s a win-win.
- Environmental benefits – Oat milk on its own is already pretty good for the environment. But in the concentrated form, there are so many fab benefits. A 400g pouch of oat milk powder creates 4 litres of oat milk! Think about the shipping and CO2 emission differences between 4 cartons of oat milk and 1 pouch of powder.
- They are easier to recycle – Tetra cartons which is what oat milk is kept in have to be recycled at recycling centres which is very inconvenient. Whilst the Overherd pouches cannot be recycled at home yet, they can be taken to supermarkets. Everyone goes to the supermarket, making this much more convenient. Make sure you remember to wash out the pouch (and carton). Furthermore, Overherd pouches are made from only one material which makes recycling much easier. Read more about their recycling here.
- The colour – Overherd oat milk powder creates oat milk which is more white than Oatley’s milk. Colour doesn’t really matter, but I find it more appetising.
- Gluten-free – Personally, gluten-free doesn’t impact me, but Overherd is one of the only oat milk brands to be fortified with calcium AND be GF!

I have never heard of powdered oat milk, but this is such a great idea (particularly for those, like you pointed out, that don’t use a lot of dairy or plant-based milk). I enjoy oat milk and have tried a variety of brands, but at the moment I use cashew milk. However, if I can find this product (or something like it), I will keep some oat milk powder in my cupboard!

Yeah, it is really cool!

What a brilliant idea. My husband drinks regular milk so we do buy it, but I use oat milk in some of my soup and other recipes. I haven’t seen oat milk powder in Canada but I will be watching out for it now that I know it exists.
Caroline says
Absolutely, hope it becomes available in Canada soon!

What a great idea! I don’t always finish my oat milk in time, so having it in a powder form makes it much more convenient and less wasteful. Thanks for sharing!
Caroline says
Totally agree x

I didn’t know powdered oat milk was a thing, and Overherd’s oat milk powder does sound like a great alternative and more environmentally friendly option to regular oat milk. Also, it’s great that you can make the amount of oat milk you’ll drink without worrying about waste, and I like that they have a subscription along with a one-off price.
Caroline says
Totally 🙂

What an interesting product! I’m a big fan of oat milk but didn’t know anything like this was a thing. I don’t always buy it but I like making overnight oats with it and I think tea tastes muchhhh better with it!
Caroline says
Totally agree about tea!

This is such a great idea for a product. When I first came across the way milk alternatives are made, and that most of It is only water, I lost faith in the brands that sell overpriced water to people (who are mostly unaware about it). However, this product solves that. You only pay for the actual product. The eco-friendliness and the user-friendliness of this product definitely makes it stand out. Thank you for sharing about this brand.
Caroline says
Absolutely!
