UK seasonal fruit and vegetables in summer

June 5, 2022 Filed Under: Blog posts, Environmental, Sustainability

It’s not officially summer until the 21st of June, however, I am sharing the seasonal fruit and vegetables in June, July and August…so it doesn’t really matter! First of all, can we just talk about how quickly this year is going? How is it already June? Make sure you have read my recent post where I share my June monthly advertisers – lots of amazing bloggers! We are halfway through 2022 already which is just crazy. I’ve finished my second year and am going into my third year which seems very hard to believe. It’s been tough and an absolute rollercoaster of emotions, but I do love uni and studying. Anyway, I’m starting to go off on a tangent, so in today’s blog post I’m sharing the fruit and vegetables in summer that are in season for the UK.

Why should you eat in season?

There are so many brilliant benefits of eating in season.

Money – Eating fruit and vegetables that are in season in your country means that the production and transport costs are low. Growing food in the native climate is always best because it is a natural thing and doesn’t require a synthetic climate which costs money. The transport costs will be low because instead of importing halfway across the road, it will be up/down the country at most.

Environment – The air miles from being imported creates a lot of greenhouse gas emissions, which are very bad for the planet. Forced growth is when a fruit/veg is grown in a synthetic climate. It is like using a greenhouse, but rather than using the sun for warmth, putting lots of heaters within it so that the food is forced to grow. The supermarkets can call the produce ‘British’, but it could potentially be emitting more greenhouse gases than one across the world. Sometimes, there is just no winning! Eating in-season food will reduce your carbon footprint 🙂

Taste – Food that is grown in the country you are in just tastes better! There are fewer fertilisers that have been used to keep it fresh for the journey etc.

On my parents’ allotment, they brought back a big bucket full of broad beans. strawberries, chard and garlic. Such an interesting post, you’ve made a good case for eating seasonally and I am all for it! We grow bits in the garden (blueberries, cherries, apples, herbs and a few veggies) but when buying I’d always choose local over imported. I didn’t know exactly what is in season which month though, so your lists are very useful. I’ve bookmarked this page to refer back to throughout the summer.

Love this time of year! I just wish it lasted longer. Right now, we are eating asparagus every day. We buy it from a local farm and it is just SO delicious. We’re a few weeks away from local strawberries here. I also love blueberries later in July and August because they freeze so well.

Nice article. Though I don’t live in UK, but I totally support eating seasonal fruits and vegetables. I’m in India and it is mango season here. We all are gorging ourselves on the delicious fruit now-a-days.

Love this list, that’s super handy! I was actually so happy to see that the strawberries and cherries were back in the shops again. They’re my favorite fruits and I can’t wait to start snacking in them or using them in baked goods again!
