If youβre dedicated to the idea of sustainability, environmental friendliness, and feeling close to nature, then that can reflect in how you design your home as well. Aside from things like choosing upcycled or recycled furniture, there are a lot of ways to embody a more natural feeling in your home. Here, weβre going to look at a few of them.
In The Beginning, There Was Light
Perhaps the simplest way to make your home feel more natural is through its lighting. Changing from being overly reliant on electrical light fixtures towards maximising your natural light is a subtle change, but when rooms are much brighter and feel more open, it can make a big difference. Opt for large windows when you have the opportunity to add them, and make better use of your existing ones by using sheer curtains or blinds, rather than heavy drapes. Consider placing mirrors opposite windows to bounce light around the space or using glass doors to bring sunshine deeper into the home.
Incorporate A Little Life With Houseplants
Bringing nature indoors can be a great way to make the home feel calmer, brighter, and even healthier, as it can improve your air quality. Whether youβre using tall statement plants like fiddle-leaf figs or smaller and easier options such as succulents, the texture and colour that a good plant can add to a room should never be underestimated. Just make sure that you choose plants that meet your lifestyle and how much care youβre able to give them. Few things are as depressing as finding a plant prematurely wilting because youβre not able to give it the care it needs.
Opt For Natural Materials
Thereβs nothing that grounds your home in the natural world quite like making sure that as many of its materials come from that world as possible. Wooden floors and wall panels can be a great start, but wood isnβt your only option. From a stone countertop to marble dining tables, natural materials can look as luxurious as they can rustic and simple. You have a lot of room to explore different aesthetics within the sheer variety of natural materials, so take your time to find your style.
Blur The Boundaries Of Your Home
Indoor and outdoor spaces might normally be separate, but they donβt have to be entirely divided. Blurring those lines, such as installing patio doors that open onto gardens, indoor space styled with outdoor furniture, or creating an outdoor dining space, can help you create a more seamless transition and help you enjoy the best of both worlds. By weaving together interior and exterior design, your home feels less confined and more expansive, embracing the beauty of the outdoors while still maintaining the comfort and cosiness of indoor living.
A truly natural home doesnβt have to feel raw, unfinished, or cheap. The right materials, focus on decor elements, and approach to how you use your space can make your home natural, healthy, and super inviting. Keep the tips above in mind next time youβre redesigning your space.
