Bower Collective washing up liquid review

March 23, 2022 Filed Under: Blog posts, Sustainability

AD/AFF – Some of these products have affiliate links. You can read my disclaimer here.

I recently bought a washing up refill from Bower Collective and I thought I would share my thoughts on it. Stay tuned for the amazing discount at the end of the post (hint: it includes chocolate!). Previously, I had been going to a refill shop to get my washing up liquid, but it takes me 2 buses to get there. Although there are lots of refill shops in Dorset, they are all at least 2 buses which aren’t very feasible. I decided to try out the Bower Collective lavender washing up liquid which gets sent via the post.

Why should I get refills?

Refills are so much more sustainable than buying a new plastic bottle of washing up liquid every time you run out. You don’t need to buy a fancy bottle, just reuse the plastic one you already have. As much as plastic is negative, once it has been made you should use it as much as you can.

Who are Bower Collective?

Bower Collective was created to make sustainable living accessible with products that are good for the planet. Their inspiration is from the Bowerbird which recycles/reuses brightly coloured plastic scraps to decorate its nest! Bower Collective sell a massive range of sustainable products, not just their washing up liquid, which I’m going to be reviewing. You can buy so many amazing products from them, including cleaning, bathroom, kitchen, dental, period care, pets, beauty & kids products.

Why should I choose them?

  • Bower products are made in reusable and refillable packaging.
  • They work just as well as non-sustainable products – I believe better!
  • They are committed to reducing their carbon footprint impact – over 90% of products are made in the UK
  • Where possible, they have all natural ingredients & are non-toxic for people and ecology
  • All suppliers meet the Ethical Trade Initiative Base Code which ensures workers are paid a living wage and are treated fairly
  • All Bower products are cruelty free & animal testing free
  • Most Bower products are vegan (apart from the ones containing beeswax)
  • Free from SLS and parabens
  • Fragenced with essential oils
  • 20p of each purchase will go towards the Marine Conservation Society’s ‘Save Our Seagrasses’ appeal to protect endangered seagrasses in the UK

The refill process

  1. Choose your washing up liquid
  2. Choose the subscribe & save option – you get 10% off and can cancel/edit your subscription anytime
  3. Return up to 4 empty pouches at a time for FREE, in the return envelope provided
  4. The empty pouches are either recycled with their UK specialist partner, or refilled with the same product!

Bower Collective washing up liquid review

Let me start by saying, my delivery came so quickly which I was very happy about because I was completely out of washing up liquid! I ordered 1L of the lavender washing up liquid*, as well as a pink glass dispenser* because my plastic washing-up liquid bottle was thrown away by someone πŸ€¦β€β™€οΈ. I chose the pink one because if you know me, most of my stuff is pink aha!

Aside from the sustainability of the product, one of the things I love most is the lavender scent! I am so happy that it is from the lavender essential oil* which has loads of amazing health benefits.

The glass bottle dispenser used about half of the washing up liquid. I have been using this product for about 2 months, washing up about once or twice a day and I have used just over a third. What I’m trying (not very well!) to say is that the washing up liquid foams up so well. When I only have a few things I use one pump of washing up liquid which is plenty and ensures that my things are cleaned properly.

I bought a water & oil resistant custom label* from BellamyStone on Etsy, which you obviously don’t need, but I just love how it looks!

Discount code

Now for the part you’ve all been waiting for… You can get Β£15 off on orders over Β£20 and a FREE Tony’s Chocolonely bar when you use this link*! The free Tony’s Chocolonely bar is only available until the 3rd of April 2022, so make sure you order before then. Remember, they don’t just sell washing up liquid, but a whole range of other products too.

Have you tried Bower Collective washing up liquid or any of their other products before?

Best wishes, Cx

This sounds like an amazing alternative to going to a refill shop. So convenient to have products right to your door πŸ™‚

Oooo this sounds like a fab brand! I don’t know why, but just knowing you get a free chocolate bar using your code makes me feel more positively too πŸ˜‚ I do love chocolate but it’s the small things that can make a difference with how brands interact and care for their customers so I like those small touches. I really like the dispensing bottle, I’d quite like to get one of those. Good idea with the label from etsy, too. Fab review! xx

It’s so wonderful that you’ve found this option. I really wish that my favorite handwash was available with this method. I’ll have to look and see which scents Bower Collective has so that I could take advantage of their options!

    This product looks amazing.

I’ve been thinking about getting a sustainable refill and I’m sad to say the big brands don’t make them affordable or accessible enough.

This sounds like a great solution. Thank you for sharing.

This sounds like a lovely brand and I’ve never come across it before. I love that they get their name from a bird! That’s so sweet : ) I use the Bio D washing up liquid currently, because I live in walking distance of a refill shop, but I realise I’m really lucky with this! Getting items like this delivered is a great alternative.

AD/PR Product but under no obligation to post | I recently posted my review of the Estrid razor on my blog πŸ’œ
In a nut shell, the good things: βœ…
β€’ stainless steel handle & wall holder
β€’ vegan & cruelty free lubricating strip
β€’ recyclable packaging
β€’ offset transport carbon emissions
The not so good things: ❌
β€’ no recycling scheme for the razor or plastic case that contain the razor heads
But I think it is coming, so overall 3.5-4⭐️

A couple of placement pics 🌱

I have been loving my time on placement at @four_acre_farm_csa πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎ It has made me realise that I definitely want to career working outside, rather than in an office. It’s so healing to amongst nature πŸ¦‹ (To see what I’ve been up to, follow me on TikTok! @/envirolineblog)

The amount of litter on the beach after a hot day is disgusting! I don’t know how people can think it is acceptable to leave their rubbish πŸ’”
-
We managed to pick over 5 bags of litter, but there was so much more around. A group of men next to us left all of their litter. We picked it up and took it to the bin, which they were standing next to. Why could they not have taken it themselves?
-
As you can see from the first pic, there were so many seagulls surrounding the litter, trying to get food & they could easily mistake litter for food 😒 It is bound to be swept further into sea which will harm other poor animals πŸ¬πŸ¦€
-
A 2 minute beach clean goes a long way, imagine if everyone did that? Next time you see litter, please take 2 minutes to pick some up! πŸ’™ @2minutehq
-
The weather is so nice at the moment, but please don’t hurt the environment by leaving your litter. If you are bringing stuff to the beach, remember to bring a rubbish bag. Leave only footprints πŸ‘£ 🌊

My plastic free july swap is @smolproducts laundry capsules! I chose this swap because I’ve ran out of what I was using before so thought this would be perfect.
-
My full review will be up on my blog tomorrow, but one thing I will say is the scent is lovely 😍 Sometimes I find eco products are fragrance free which I don’t really like, but the laundry capsules have a clear clean laundry smell 🧺 (you can buy fragrance free if that’s what you prefer!)

Also, with Smol you can get a free trial where you only have to pay postage - for me that was Β£1 πŸ₯³

Plant cucumbers with me! Homegrown cucumbers taste so much nicer than supermarket ones, so I hope this works πŸ‘©β€πŸŒΎI bought this biodegradable seed pod thing from Asda for only 99p 😍 Once it grows a bit, I’ll thin the seeds and then repot it 🌱πŸ₯’
