Choosing seed is one of the first major decisions a farmer makes each growing season, and it can affect almost everything that follows. The right variety can handle local conditions, make better use of available moisture, and reduce some of the problems that require extra inputs later.
This is becoming increasingly important as farmers deal with changing weather, soil concerns, and rising production costs. The Canadian government reports that 60.9% of agricultural land prepared for seeding used no-till seeding in 2021, showing how widely farmers are adopting practices that can support soil conservation. But sustainable farming involves more than how the soil is prepared. The seed itself deserves careful thought.
Here are five things farmers should consider when choosing seed for a more sustainable operation.
1. Match the Seed to Local Growing Conditions
A variety that performs well on one farm may not produce the same results somewhere else. Soil type, moisture levels, temperature, growing season length, and disease pressure can all affect performance.
This is particularly important in areas where weather can change quickly. Alberta Agriculture notes that crop production in the province is highly dependent on weather and climate, with changing rainfall and temperature patterns affecting farming decisions.
Before buying from an Alberta seed company, farmers should consider whether the varieties they offer are suited to the growing conditions in their area. A supplier familiar with local conditions may have useful information about variety performance, maturity, disease resistance, and other traits that can affect how a crop performs.
Farmers should therefore look beyond a variety’s headline yield number. A variety with good drought tolerance, strong disease resistance, or an appropriate maturity period may be more useful over several seasons than one that simply produced the highest yield in a single trial.
2. Look Beyond Yield
Yield is obviously important. Farmers need to make money, and a variety that consistently produces a strong crop has clear value. But yield should be considered alongside other characteristics.
Lodging resistance, disease tolerance, maturity, standability, and grain quality can all affect the final result. A crop that looks impressive at harvest may not be as profitable if it requires more management or suffers from problems that could have been avoided with a better-suited variety.

5. Test New Varieties Before Going All In

A variety that performs well in a trial may respond differently to your soil, management style, weather, or planting conditions.
A practical approach is to test promising varieties on a smaller number of acres before making a full switch. This gives farmers a chance to compare the new option with their current variety under the same conditions.
That approach can make the decision less of a gamble. A side-by-side trial gives farmers their own evidence to work with. If the new variety performs well, it can be expanded in future seasons. If it does not, the potential loss is limited.

Sustainable farming does not have one universal formula. What works depends on the farm, the soil, the climate, the crop, and the farmer’s goals.
